Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu Linux distribution, is hosting a contest called the Ubuntu App Showdown. Participants have several weeks to build and submit a working Ubuntu application. The submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges who will choose the contest’s winners.

In order to qualify, the applications must be packaged in an Ubuntu Personal Package Archive (PPA) and be submitted to the Ubuntu Software Center through the Ubuntu app developer program. The prizes include a System 76 laptop and Nokia’s N9 Linux phone.

Canonical has been working to attract more third-party application developers to the Ubuntu platform. The company launched a special developer program last year that makes it easier to distribute (and optionally sell) stand-alone applications through the Ubuntu Software Center.
